Iceland High-Density FBDIMM

Iceland is a next-generation, high-density FBDIMM design. It provides a mounting area for 36 large DDR2 DRAM devices. This is accomplished by utilizing the unique features of the ArctiCore module technology. For Iceland, 36 1Gb DRAM components result in a 4GB, 2-rank FBDIMM, while 36 2Gb DRAM components result in a 8GB, 2-rank FBDIMM. Target applications for the Iceland FBDIMM are next-generation server, workstation and networking systems.

Both the thinness of the Iceland FBDIMM, as well as the thermal core that forms the center of the module, contribute to Iceland’s exceptional thermal performance. Compared to conventional FBDIMM designs, Iceland operates at temperatures up to 25ºC cooler for the Advanced Memory Buffer (AMB) component and up to 10ºC cooler for the DRAM components. Please see the ArctiCore FBDIMM Thermal Whitepaper for more information on Iceland’s thermal performance.

Iceland FBDIMMs are manufactured using standard manufacturing processes with only one additional, automated step for folding the flexible circuit around the thermal core.

Entorian has been working with JEDEC on standardizing the Iceland FBDIMM design, with JEDEC standardization expected to be complete in the Fall of 2006.
